Samsung’s newest high-end Galaxy smartphones arrived in South Africa last month, and by many accounts, they are mighty fine phones indeed.
CNET spent considerable time and effort putting them through their paces, eventually concluding that while the phones are indeed fantastic, there are a few features that don’t quite live up to the hype. The tagline on their official review reads “Two steps forward, one step back”.
Where the phones win is with their amazing dual-curved-edge AMOLED displays (5.8-inch and 6.2-inch respectively) that are delightful to look at and bright enough even for outdoor use, their new CPUs (Snapdragon 845/Exynos 9810) that deliver super-fast performance, the improved positioning of the phones’ fingerprint sensors (a correction of a major irritation for owners of the S8 and S8 Plus), and their overall aesthetic. These are really attractive, really fast phones.
Where they fall down a bit, says CNET, is when it comes to certain functions of their cameras and some of Samsung’s extras, like the much-touted “turn yourself into an emoji” AR feature and its super slow-motion mode that under-delivers on image quality.
These are apparently minor gripes, however – overall, their cameras are definitely much better than those of the S8 and S8 Plus, and the phones are excellent upgrades for owners of Android phones older than the S8/S8 Plus.
