Technology isn’t just about AI, machine learning, quantum computing and other exotic-sounding things. It’s also about helping people in a practical, real sense through new innovations like 3D printing.
And that’s exactly what a mechanical engineering technologist from the Free State is doing: she’s using 3D printing technology to create prosthetic breasts for breast cancer survivors who’ve had mastectomies. Her name is Nneile Nkholise, and she founded the iMedTech Group, which is based in Thaba Nchu in the Free State.
She says she is “…passionate about technology innovation in the healthcare and education sectors”, and that she wants to lead South Africa’s prosthetics industry.
Her company makes prostheses by “…adding material in layers with 3D modeling software and layering material”, and casting silicone inside the resulting model. She is currently working on a project to bring 1000 breast prosthetics to 1000 breast cancer survivors around the country, who can’t afford the technology.
