HP South Africa has just announced the local availability of its smallest-ever workstation, the Z2 Mini G3 Workstation. Despite packing in some serious hardware, somehow HP’s engineers have kept its physical dimensions very much on the diminutive side.
Most impressive is the fact that the workstation is the height of an espresso cup – 58mm – and is small and light enough to be mounted behind a monitor using the screen’s VESA mount.
That’s right, the Z2 is almost ridiculously small, yet still manages to pack in up to a Xeon E3 processor, a maximum of 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and enough graphics horsepower for Computer Aided Drawing artists to ply their trade on multiple ultra-widescreen monitors. The Z2 Mini G3 can connect up to six external displays out the box, too.
This versatile screen connectivity and impressive graphics oomph comes courtesy of a discrete NVIDIA Quadro graphics card that HP somehow managed to get into the mini ITX chassis.
HP also says the Z2 Mini G3 Workstation is three times faster than “a business-class PC mini”, and ten times smaller than the company’s most powerful desktop-class business PC.

The video emphasises how the new workstation has been designed for “workspaces of the future”; clearly, that means “Workspaces that value uncluttered desk space, elegant looks and no compromises on computing power”.
Value Computing Area Country Manager for HP Africa, Fulvio Donà, said in a statement that “Small is desirable but it shouldn’t come at the expense of functionality. By refusing to compromise on performance, we packed a wagon load of functionality into a sleek, silver grey octagonal powerhouse. We also added a discrete graphics card for blistering 3D design with the Performance model version, whisper-quiet acoustics and enough ports to support 4-6 displays.”
The Z2 Mini G3 Workstation has a recommended retail price that starts at R16599, excluding VAT, and is available for order from Tarsus Distribution.
