A new range of solid-state drives from Samsung will arrive in South Africa next year, offering a combination of performance, capacity, and value the likes of which the SSD market has not yet seen.

Samsung is calling these drives their “QVO” range, which stands for “Quality and Value-Optimised”. They are based on the company’s QLC (quad-level cell) NAND memory technology.
QLC is the reason Samsung can offer these drives at such good prices because it’s an established technology that’s cost-effective to produce. This lowers the price-per-gigabyte cost quite dramatically, and Samsung is passing that saving on to consumers.
These drives were first outed by French website NasExpert, which listed the drives along with their European retail pricing last week.

- 2TB – €225.96
- 4TB – €451.93
Those numbers are all excellent, considering if you were to shop around right now for even just a 2TB SSD you’d be looking at paying anything from R6500 and up.
Samsung’s QVO drives are finally bringing multi-terabyte SSD prices down to earth. This is a welcome move for people who appreciate the speed of SSD tech but who aren’t impressed with pricing as capacity increases.
Samsung also recently launched a page on their website detailing these drives.
At the official launch they said that “Samsung continues to lead the move toward multi-terabyte SSDs with the introduction of the Samsung 860 QVO, delivering fast performance, reliability and value to more consumers around the world.”
Temporarily Sold Out
The drives have proven so popular, that at the time of this writing NasExpert has temporarily sold out of every model.
There is no word yet on South African pricing; we do know that these drives are expected to land in the country soon and will be available for sale early next year through Tarsus Distribution.
