South African tech website MyBroadband recently ran an article on the fastest SSDs available for purchase in South Africa. To anyone familiar with Samsung’s solid-state drives and their exceptional performance, that these featured prominently will come as no surprise.
In fact, of the ten positions, Samsung occupied six. Performance data was collated from Anandtech’s benchmark database; products from certain brands were excluded due to not being available locally, like some from OCZ, Zotac, Plextor, and Patriot.
Hard drive transfer rates have long stood between personal computers and the kind of operating system and application performance that make using them a pleasure.
With solid-state disks configured as operating system drives, that is no longer the case – systems fitted with SSDs are demonstrably quicker and more responsive than systems using traditional mechanical hard drives, thanks to their blistering data transfer rates.
The very fastest drive on the list was Samsung’s 960 Pro 2TB, which clocked an “average data rate” of 1 139.34MB/s, costing a rand short of R20k at retail. The slowest of the ten was Samsung’s older-gen 850 EVO 1TB drive, with an average data rate of “just” 317MB/s and a retail price of R4618.
With any of these drives installed, OS boot times are dramatically faster, as is any task requiring the processing of significant amounts of data, like video editing. For users interested in high-performance systems, an SSD is a must.
