When a monitor-maker creates a monitor that ticks all of the boxes modern PC gamers want from their screens, and then adds even more features and makes the screen bigger than literally anything that’s come before it, it’s no surprise that it wins awards.
And that’s exactly what has happened to Samsung and its jaw-dropping CHG90 gaming monitor, a 49-inch, super-ultrawide, QLED, 144Hz, G-Sync-enabled behemoth of a screen: it won “Monitor of the Year 2017” at the recent Trusted Reviews Awards.
Its crazy 32:9 aspect ratio means it is the width of two 16:9 monitors placed side by size. That means the CHG90’s native resolution is an impressive 3840 x 1080, which is around half that of 4K, so gamers get the benefit of the super wideness of the monitor, without a need for their graphics hardware to work as hard as it would powering a 4K display.
Of course, such incredible visual fidelity doesn’t come cheap, as the CHG90 goes for around $1500 at US retail.
Still, it’s a marvel of engineering, and Samsung deserves all of the kudos it’s getting for its efforts. Expect to see these on store shelves in the very near future.
