The Unique Speaker Bureau hosted a big event in Johannesburg recently, where the organisation got decision-makers and event organisers together to show off how speakers on the local public speaking circuit can benefit their businesses.
The aim of the event was to give some of the biggest names in the public speaking game a 5-minute window in which they could wow the audience and potentially secure themselves speaking engagements for upcoming events.
The speaker line-up featured well-known local personalities like Nadia Bilchik, Bruce Whitfield, and Danny K, but also a good selection of people from the business speaking circuit like TomorrowToday’s Graeme Condrington, “The Other Michael Jackson” and Rapelang Rabana.
Leader concerns
The five-hour event saw over 40 speakers take the stage – some of whom actually stuck to their five-minute allocation – and talk about the kind of things that business leaders are and should be concerned about.
They tackled a diverse range of topics from goal-setting to ambitions to travel to Mars to the problem of “not shooting for the impossible”, which Graeme Codrington said is a large part of the drive that produces the excellence needed in today’s world, and its absence is sorely missed. As he so rightly pointed out, Nelson Mandela was very fond of saying things like “It always seems impossible until it’s done”…
The most interesting overlap this writer noticed at the event was the advice given by several of the speakers to the leaders in the room to simply listen – to their fellow executives, their customers, and just as importantly their staff.
It’s about the showcase
While each speaker was certainly engaging in their own right, the point wasn’t as much the content of their talks as it was to showcase the kind of things each speaker can talk about and how they deliver their talks, so that event organisers in the audience could get a feel for which speakers and topics would suit their upcoming events.
