Local tech news site MyBroadband has published an article describing some of 2019’s best solid-state hard drives (SSDs), and Samsung has snagged two of the five spots.
This is no surprise to anyone who has used either the Samsung 970 Pro M.2 drive, or the EVO 860 2.5-inch drive – both are fast, nicely-priced, and durable, as any good SSD should be.
970 EVO Pro
The 970 EVO Pro is particularly deserving of this recognition, as it represents the cutting edge of consumer-focused SSD technology: it’s a PCIe NVMe drive with very impressive read and write speeds of 3500MB/s and 2300MB/s respectively.
Its MTBF – Mean Time Before Failure – is also very impressive at 1.5 million hours, and its durability is outstanding at 600 TBW (Terabytes Written) for the 512GB model, and 1200 TBW for the 1TB model.
TBW explained
TBW refers to the amount of data that can be written to the drive before the memory cells experience any sort of degradation. It offers an idea of how long the drive will last, but that is dependent on how much data is written to it every day.
To illustrate just how long 600TBW is, consider this:
Say your warranty is 5 years. That means 5 x 365, which is 1825 days. To reach 600 terabytes written to the drive in that time, your system will need to write 328.8GB of data to the drive, every day. That doubles for the 1200TBW of the 1TB Samsung 970, so a whopping 657.6GB would need to be written to the drive every day in that same 5 year period.
And considering a forum poster on Tomshardware shared back in 2014 that his 120GB SSD – which ran 24/7 over a two-year period – barely managed 7 TBW in that time, 600TBW and 1200TBW indicate that Samsung’s drives are very robust indeed.

Both of these Samsung SSDs are very deserving of MyBroadband’s recognition, and so will be a definite enhancement to any system that makes use of them.
